Despite all its beauty, São Paulo is a city that, we must admit, suffers from high levels of pollution. Not just the air, due to the large fleet of vehicles, for example, or the rivers, such as the Tietê. But also the noise pollution. After all, a city with so much “hustle and bustle” ends up having much higher noise levels than a quiet village in the countryside, doesn’t it? And if we already realized that São Paulo’s daily life is pretty noisy, it’s no surprise that the capital is one of the noisiest cities in the world.
São Paulo is among the 10 noisiest cities in the world
It’s already clear to us that Brazil’s largest capital never sleeps! And this is clearly seen in the constant noise. Ambulance sirens, horns, loud music from bars, “chatter” on buses or in the subway; all of this can be heard at virtually any time of the day.
That’s why São Paulo was voted the seventh noisiest city in the world. The title comes from a research by the international platform Preeply, which analyzed noise in cities all over the world. To do so, it based itself on factors such as population density, number of visitors per year, average time spent in congestions, noise pollution rate and even the opinion of those who frequent the city.
SP has a higher noise index than the “noisiest city”
Following all the factors analyzed, the noisiest city in the world is Paris, in France. However, it’s important to note that, looking at the indicators separately, some are higher here than in the City of Light.
With regard to the noise pollution indicator, for example, SP is higher than the French capital. While Parisians suffer from an average noise of 58.62 decibels, São Paulo residents live with an average of 68.97 decibels. A little less than the minimum harmful noise indicated by the World Health Organization (WHO), of 75 dB.
Similarly, according to the survey, the average time spent in traffic jams is longer for São Paulo residents than Parisians. In other words, despite being seventh among the noisiest cities, in some respects we are closer than we think to the top spots.
