One question many owners have when traveling is “can dogs go to the beach”? And the answer is: yes! Although many cities forbid pets from going to the beach, some have pet-friendly beaches where you can enjoy the coast with your four-legged friend.
So if you’re thinking of hitting the road with your pet, check out some beaches on the São Paulo coast where they’ll be very welcome. As well as cities that don’t allow animals on the shore, so you don’t get caught by surprise during your trip.
Pet-friendly beaches in São Paulo
Santos
In São Paulo’s second largest city, owners and their pets can enjoy the day together at José Menino Beach. Dogs are allowed from 6am to 9am and from 4pm to 7pm on the stretch between Emissário and Posto 1.
Guardians must bring their pet’s vaccination card and the appropriate leash. Don’t forget the bags for collecting feces!
São Vicente
Another pet-friendly beach option in São Paulo is Praia dos Milionários, in São Vicente. There, pets are welcome on the stretch between Rua Pero Correia and Alameda Paulo Gonçalves. Although there are no restricted hours, the city council recommends that walks take place before 10am and after 6pm, in order to avoid burns on the paws.
Owners must be of legal age and bring their pet‘s vaccination card and deworming certificate. In addition, pets’ feces must be picked up, and failure to do so can result in fines of up to R$500. Finally, the presence of animals in heat or antisocial animals is restricted.
Cities that ban dogs on the beach
Guardians should be careful before traveling with their pets, as some cities have laws that prohibit the presence of animals on the coast. For example:
- Ubatuba
- Ilhabela
- São Sebastião
- Guarujá
- Itanhaém
- Mongaguá
- Peruíbe
- Caraguatatuba
In these cases, animals are allowed on sidewalks, but are prohibited on the beach, either in the sea or on the strip of sand. Most municipalities impose a fine in the event of non-compliance, which can range from R$500 (Ilhabela) to R$20,000 in cases of repeat offenses (Guarujá).
