Amid trails, lakes, and lush greenery in the Serra da Cantareira, there is a rustic village that has become a must-visit stop for those seeking a unique getaway.
O Velhão, in Mairiporã, features a wood-fired restaurant, antiques, cafes, small shops, and buildings that look like they’re straight out of a movie. All of this right in the northern part of São Paulo.
O Velhão: where cuisine, nature, and nostalgia meet
Founded in the 1970s by Moacyr Archanjo dos Santos and his wife Iracema, the space began as a store selling salvaged items and antiques.
Over the years, it grew to become one of the most traditional attractions in the Serra da Cantareira. After all, it combines cuisine, art, nature, and a nostalgic atmosphere that is hard to find so close to the capital.
The As Véia restaurant remains the heart of the complex, with Dona Iracema still at the helm of the kitchen. Known for its Brazilian dishes cooked over a wood-fired stove, it still features interiors filled with wood, antique objects, and rustic decor.
On weekends, the venue also hosts the famous colonial-style breakfast, featuring homemade cakes, breads, pastries, and traditional treats amidst the mountain atmosphere.

Much more than just a restaurant
In addition, the cafes scattered throughout the venue still make us feel like we’re in a real antique shop, with collector’s items and offerings for coffee lovers.
The experience, however, goes far beyond the food. Strolling through O Velhão is part of the outing: among cobblestone streets, antique furniture, gardens, and buildings inspired by Italian villages, every corner seems designed for those who love discovering places full of character.
Those who decide to extend their visit into the evening will also find a pizzeria, a brewery, and live music performances featuring rock and pop-rock bands. The complex also features craft and home decor shops with handmade pieces and rustic-style items.
It’s no coincidence that many people have already made O Velhão a São Paulo classic. After all, with nature and cuisine in a single itinerary, you get that feeling of having escaped the city without having to go far.
