For many moms, balancing the daily routine with motherhood is a complicated task. That’s why the city of São Paulo has Espaço Maternidade, a safe environment that welcomes them with their babies during the breastfeeding period. Located in one of the capital’s busiest stations, the Light the initiative aims to bring more comfort to women and their children during their daily commute.
Maternity Space brings more comfort to breastfeeding women in transit
The CTPM Maternity Space is an initiative of two state secretariats, for Women’s Policies and Metropolitan Transport. The aim is to make public transport more welcoming and accessible for mothers and babies on the move.
In a 56m² space, they find comfortable armchairs where they can breastfeed calmly, as well as water filters and a pantry with a microwave, where they can have a snack between transfers. There are also accessible toilets, areas for changing diapers and a playroom to keep the little ones entertained.
The initiative has welcomed almost 600 mothers since it opened
The Estação da Luz Maternity Space is a pioneer in the capital, serving as a pilot project for the initiative. It opened in March of this year, and since then it has provided almost 600 services!
As well as providing a safe environment, the place has professionals ready to help mothers with any questions. They advise on the importance of breastfeeding, as well as the importance of donating milk to babies in need.
For moms who want to visit the space, it’s at Platform 5 of Luz Station, next to the access to the Airport Express.
