Starting this Tuesday, the 13th, the Traffic Engineering Company (CET) will begin enforcing regulations on the use of electric scooters in São Paulo. Although the rules have been in effect since August, the agency will now issue citations to those who violate the law.
Enforcement is carried out in partnership with the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM). The main changes involve speed limits and restrictions on riding in certain areas of the city.
The new operation also covers regular and electric bicycles. Therefore, anyone using these alternative modes of transportation should be careful to avoid getting tickets!

Electric scooters in São Paulo: check out the new regulations
If you regularly ride an electric scooter around the city, you should be aware of the speed limit. From now on, these vehicles may travel at speeds of up to 20 km/h, regardless of the general speed limit on the road.
Scooters may only be ridden on bike paths, bike lanes exclusively for bicycles, and roads with a speed limit of up to 40 km/h for cars. Anyone riding on sidewalks or in areas exclusively for pedestrians, therefore, risks getting into trouble!

Can I get a ticket for riding an electric scooter in São Paulo?
Anyone riding a scooter in São Paulo needs to plan their route more carefully, avoiding paths that include sidewalks or streets with speed limits exceeding 40 km/h.
Violations of the law fall under Article 255 of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), classified as a medium-level offense, with a fine of R$ 130.16. Since riding electric scooters does not require a driver’s license, the penalty does not add points to the National Driver’s License (CNH) but is linked solely to the rider’s CPF number.
