After being abandoned for 20 years, Cine Ipiranga is about to open its doors – but only for one day. This Saturday, the 12th, the 1st Mostra Angústia de Cinema will occupy Ipiranga’s historic halls with free movie screenings, reviving one of the most iconic spaces in 20th century São Paulo culture.
In other words, this weekend you’ll have the opportunity to revisit one of São Paulo’s first street cinemas, which for a long time has lived only in the memory of old São Paulo residents.
Cine Ipiranga reopens its doors for a day!
In the middle of the 20th century, Cine Ipiranga was one of the hottest cinemas in São Paulo. Its theaters, which could seat over 1900 spectators, were a meeting place for all genders and ages.
In 2005, however, the theater’s manager announced that it would close. Since then, the building – which is listed by the city council – has remained abandoned, with no plans to reopen it permanently.
So Mostra Angústia offers people the chance to revisit this São Paulo icon, with film screenings, discussions and even a party at Cine Ipiranga.
