Do you know Castelinho de Perus? Located in the northwest of São Paulo, this building is one of the oldest, and certainly one of the most unusual, in Vila Perus. Anyone passing by always slows down to admire the façade full of mosaics made from shards of tiles, a style that is immediately reminiscent of the works of the Catalan master Antoni Gaudí.

Learn about the history of Castelinho de Perus
The castelinho began to take shape in the 20th century at the hands of Spanish immigrant João Rufino Fernandes Moreno, who dedicated many years of his life to building the house. With patience, creativity and manual skill, João cut and fitted each piece of tile that makes up the mosaics on the façade. The result is a true work of homemade art, full of shapes and colors, preserved to this day by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family still lives in the property and proudly carries on the memory of “Castelinho de Perus”. It’s not uncommon to see enchanted visitors stopping to look at the façade, after all, its unusual shape really catches the eye. Inside, however, the castelinho looks like an ordinary house, it’s the outside that becomes the great spectacle for those who appreciate different architectures around the city.
