There are songs that are to the history of music what the Assis Chateaubriand Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP) is to São Paulo. What do they have in common? We recognize both immediately—whether by the unmistakable silhouette of this symbol of modern architecture on Paulista Avenue or by the opening chords of hits like “Billie Jean” and “Thriller.” In the coming months, the iconic museum is preparing to host “Candlelight: A Tribute to Michael Jackson.”
Located in the heart of São Paulo, MASP will be illuminated by a veritable sea of candles in a tribute dedicated tothe “King of Pop.” For about an hour, the echoing strings, soft lighting, and elegance of classical music will be part of an intimate experience and a program that is, to say the least, unique.

A Brief Look at Michael Jackson
Nearly two decades after his death, global curiosity about the pop star is once again taking center stage with the recently released biopic “Michael.” The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring the singer’s own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, traces the intense roller coaster that was the artist’s life.
From his first steps in the spotlight with the Jackson 5 to his phenomenal solo career, Michael Jackson racked up countless international awards, including Grammys and American Music Awards, and sold over 350 million records. From his status as a music legend to the controversial media scandals, the “King of Pop” continues to make headlines and inspire tributes; but few combine an outstanding repertoire with such an iconic venue.
The “King of Pop’s” greatest hits

Instead of recreating the atmosphere of a stadium, the MASP Auditorium will host an intimate concert where the audience can enjoy some of the greatest hits that have marked—and continue to mark—different generations.
Featuring a string quartet, the show’s repertoire spans different phases of Michael Jackson’s long career, including:
- “I Want You Back”
- “Rock With You”
- “Human Nature”
- “Billie Jean”
- “Say Say Say”
- “We Are the World”
- “Man in the Mirror”
- “Smooth Criminal”
- “Black or White”
- “Heal the World”
- “Remember the Time”
- “The Way You Make Me Feel”
- “Earth Song”
- “They Don’t Really Care About Us”
- “Thriller”
And what makes MASP so special?

MASP is much more than just one of the most recognizable landmarks in São Paulo: it is a true icon of Brazilian architecture and culture. Designed by the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi, the iconic building—suspended by four pillars on Paulista Avenue —houses the most important collection of European art in the Southern Hemisphere.
Founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand with the support of Pietro and Lina Bardi, the museum today houses approximately 11,000 works ranging from antiquity to the 21st century. Strolling through the galleries of MASP means encountering works by renowned masters such as Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, and Picasso, as well as major figures in Brazilian art such as Anita Malfatti, Di Cavalcanti, Candido Portinari, and Lygia Clark.
