The “stone jungle” will soon be a little greener. That’s because this January, São Paulo is set to receive a new conservation unit covering almost 5,000 square meters. The so-called Bosque do Canário will be a breath of nature in the heart of the city, revitalizing one of the capital’s most important thoroughfares.
The new green area will be located between the Bixiga Arches and Avenida 23 de Maio, forming a biodiversity corridor from the city center to the South Zone. One of the aims is to reduce the temperature in the area, which suffers from heat islands due to the large number of vehicles in transit. Check it out!
Bosque do Canário will help preserve the environment
The new forest will be home to trees native to the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado, biomes native to the region. In all, the almost 5,000 square meters will receive 357 seedlings of 44 different species, which will bring nature back to the Center.
The project, which began in September 2023, cost around R$988,000. The grove will be a natural refuge of 4,878.93 square meters with native forests, transition areas and a large rain garden, i.e. a space where the soil and vegetation absorb more water than normal soil.
As well as reducing the local temperature, the forest will help bring native animals back to the Center. Birds, for example, will be able to occupy the new forest and even help reforest the city naturally, dispersing seeds throughout the region.
The forest will not be available for visitors
The main objective of the new green area is to preserve the local fauna and flora, and to serve as a space for scientific research. Therefore, the general public will not be able to visit it.
But we don’t have to be sad, after all, the new area promises to bring more quality of life to São Paulo residents. Just 1 kilometer away from the Bosque das Maritacas, the new conservation unit will help to create a natural corridor between the forests of the Center and those of the Marginal Tietê, making the “stone jungle” greener every day.
