In 1957, Louis Armstrong, one of the greatest names in jazz history, arrived in Brazil for a series of performances. Now, 69 years later, New Orleans jazz is once again bringing the city to life with *The Jazz Room: A Journey Through the Heart of New Orleans*.
In São Paulo, the New Orleans trumpeter also made a splash on television: his concerts were broadcast by TV Record, live from the Record Paramount Theater, and marked the arrival of major international stars on Channel 7’s lineup.
His visit to São Paulo also included a performance at the Ibirapuera Gymnasium, on the same program as singer Ângela Maria, one of the great voices of Brazilian music. Years later, on November 27, 1957, Armstrong was also hosted by President Juscelino Kubitschek at a luncheon at the Laranjeiras Palace in Rio de Janeiro, alongside prominent Brazilian musicians.

The pub and the history of jazz in the capital
The setting for this musical journey is The Blue Pub on Alameda Ribeirão Preto, an English-inspired pub that offers craft beers, exclusive drinks, and dishes inspired by British cuisine.
São Paulo’s connection to jazz, however, dates back further than many people realize. In December 1917, the American RagTime Revue had already performed at the Apollo Theater. Shortly thereafter, in August 1919, the genre gained prominence in the pages of the newspaper *O Estado de S. Paulo*, in an advertisement for a ragtime band led by Harry Kosarin.
The show’s concept is precisely to revisit this history, exploring the roots of jazz in New Orleans and its various styles. All of this features live music, improvisations, and plenty of rhythm—a night for those who enjoy discovering new sounds or simply savoring the genre’s great classics.
