São Luiz Gonzaga Parish: the church inspired by an Ancient Greek temple hidden on Paulista Avenue

In the heart of São Paulo, surrounded by the skyscrapers of Paulista Avenue, the São Luís Gonzaga Parish holds a history intertwined with the very formation of the city. Linked to the Jesuit tradition and the former Colégio São Luís, the church had its first chapel established within the educational institution , before gaining the temple that today stands out among the buildings in the area.

Construction of the church began in 1932 and was completed three years later, in 1935. The project bears the signature of Luís de Anhaia Mello, one of the most important urban planners in the history of São Paulo and also a former student of Colégio São Luís.

One of the most elegant churches on Paulista Avenue, the São Luís Gonzaga Parish stands out for its Greco-Roman architecture, an uncommon choice among Brazilian Catholic churches. Its imposing portico was inspired by the ancient Erechtheion, a temple located on the Acropolis of Athens, Greece.

The architectural details are impressive: pink granite columns standing about 11 meters tall, bronze capitals weighing approximately three tons, interiors inspired by the Roman and Corinthian styles, as well as marble imported from Italy. The monumental altar combines Italian marble and Moroccan onyx, creating one of the most sophisticated religious complexes built in São Paulo in the first half of the 20th century.

Despite the grandeur of its façade and the richness of its details, the church has a welcoming atmosphere and a capacity for about 400 people, offering a refuge of silence and contemplation amid the fast pace of Paulista.

Today, in addition to welcoming parishioners and visitors interested in its architecture and history, the São Luís Gonzaga Parish also opens its doors for Candlelight concerts, which transform the space into a setting illuminated by thousands of candles, offering a unique musical experience at one of the city’s most iconic locations.
