The musical is produced by Rodrigo Portella and the cast includes names such as César Mello, Sidney Santiago Kuanza, among others.
What can we expect from the Ray Charles musical?
Surprising as it may seem, the story begins the day after Ray Charles’ funeral. His son, Ray Charles Junior, plays a major role in the narrative and hallucinates his father’s presence. From then on, the story unfolds in a revival of the life and work of the author of hits such as ‘Hit the Road Jack’ and ‘Georgia on My Mind’.
As well as healing a wound in the topic of fatherhood, which makes the musical emotionally charged, the play also raises the social issue, which was very present in Charles’ life. As well as being a musician, he was an activist for civil rights, combating racial segregation and, during his lifetime, created an institution that promoted training projects and supported people with hearing disorders.
Ray – You Don’t Know Me promises to be intense!
For the plot, five main artists have been cast, each interpreting a phase of Ray Charles. Among them is blind pianist Luiz Otávio, who makes his theatrical debut.
As well as “Ray’s from different generations“, the musical also features a female choir inspired by the Raelettes, to make up the musical universe of the work. In the orchestra, the band plays the artist’s classics with piano, bass, drums and woodwinds. In all, 20 songs make up the show.
