Pinakotheke São Paulo has a new home! After 24 years in Morumbi, the art gallery has moved to a century-old mansion in the prestigious Higienópolis neighborhood. The move places the institution within the cultural circuit of Paulista Avenue, near the Moreira Salles Institute, MASP, and other important galleries in the region.
To inaugurate this new phase, Pinakotheke presents the exhibition “Surrealisms: Art Beyond Reason. “ The exhibition brings together around 100 works by 60 artists, balancing European classics with the movement’s developments in Latin America.
Tradition, architecture, and expansion: discover the new space in Higienópolis
The Pinakotheke gallery has a well-established history in Brazilian art. Founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1979 by art dealer Max Perlingeiro, the institution expanded its activities to São Paulo in 2002, when it moved into a modern building designed by Carlos Bratke.
In May 2026, Pinakotheke SP begins a new chapter on Minas Gerais Street. The historic 1930s mansion underwent a restoration process that preserved the original floors and moldings, while also implementing adaptations to accommodate the collection.
With the move, visitors have the chance to take a complete tour. There are approximately 180 square meters of exhibition space (almost double the previous space) on a 700-square-meter lot. The outdoor area now features a Corten steel annex for parallel exhibitions, meetings, and events, as well as a bookstore and a temporary café in partnership with Café Orfeu.

The exhibition “Surrealisms: Art Beyond Reason” stands out for presenting the concept in the plural. Curated by Max Perlingeiro and Tadeu Chiarelli, the exhibition explores the ramifications of surrealist thought throughout the 20th century, without being confined to European hegemony.
The exhibition is spread across two floors. On the ground floor, visitors can explore Latin American surrealism, with a special room entirely dedicated to the Brazilian artist Maria Martins. The upper floor, meanwhile, features works by international masters such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and M.C. Escher.
