Do you know how important women were in the creation of São Paulo? If you still don’t know, take advantage of the fact that the ‘Guided Tour: Women in the History of São Paulo’ is back.
Pátio Metrô São Bento and Caminhos do Triângulo have teamed up to bring back the tour, which takes place every Saturday in March and April. The walking tour is free and starts at 11am. However, tickets must be obtained from 10.30am.
About the guided tour
Through the streets of the Historic Triangle, the public discovers how women lived and what their roles were in the formation of São Paulo. In this way, the project presents the importance of women who, even in the face of male protagonism, stand out in various aspects of the city’s history.
The story begins when the capital of São Paulo was still a small town and continues to the present day. During the walk, figures are highlighted who, to this day, are present in the buildings, monuments, identity and memory of São Paulo, such as:
- Bartira,
- Dona Ana Pimentel,
- Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo (Marquesa de Santos),
- Yolanda Penteado,
- Maria Augusta Saraiva
- and so many other well-known and anonymous women.
The activity shows how, even in a patriarchal and macho society, these women played a part in building the city.
One of the highlights of the tour is the route to Solar da Marquesa de Santos. This famous mansion was inhabited by Domitila de Castro Canto e Melo, an important figure in Imperial Brazil. After all, the Marquesa was involved with Dom Pedro I and also contributed greatly to São Paulo’s intellectual and cultural scene.
In addition, the first woman to graduate in Law from the University of São Paulo, as well as the first to practice law in the city, Maria Augusta Saraiva, also appears during the guided tour of the center.
Finally, Bartira, Dona Ana Pimentel, Yolanda Penteado and so many other well-known and anonymous women are also among the figures who, to this day, are present in the city’s buildings, monuments, identity and memory.
