From October 1st, São Paulo will host an unprecedented exhibition about one of the most important artists of all time. ‘Frida: a singular vision of beauty and pain’ highlights the strength and energy of the Mexican artist through 18 images produced by German photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten in Mexico City.
Making use of vibrant costumes and unique settings, the photographs offer a new perspective on Frida Kahlo, while bringing a contemporary look at the artist.
The exhibition will run until October 27 at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS), with free admission. Don’t miss the chance to see this unmissable exhibition, which is coming to Brazil for the first time!
‘Frida: a singular vision of beauty and pain’
In 2024, we remember 70 years since Frida Kahlo’s death. The exhibition therefore comes as a posthumous tribute to the artist, using photography to highlight her vibrant and unmistakable energy.
To produce them, Julia Fullerton-Batten relied on models, a local film costume designer and Mexican producers. They provided her with authentic costumes from the city of Oaxaca, as well as exclusive access to unique locations. An abandoned mansion, old haciendas and the Island of the Dolls in Xochimilco, for example.
Curated by João Kulcsár, the exhibition allows you to dive into Frida Kahlo’s extraordinary universe, with a contemporary twist.
Special free workshop
On October 17, the exhibition also offers the free workshop ‘Portraits like Frida (Somos Frida)’. Taught by Taiane Ferreiras and João Kulcsár, the activity will encourage the public to create their own portraits, using Frida’s images as inspiration. The workshop will take place at 6pm in the MIS first floor foyer. There will be 30 places to fill on a first-come, first-served basis, so get there early so you don’t miss out!
