Fare increases in SP: check out the new 2025 fares
Since January 6, the fare increase for 2025 has been in effect for public transportation in São Paulo. Buses, for example, have gone from R$4.40 to R$5.00, which represents an increase of 13.6%. The subway and CPTM, on the other hand, saw a 4% increase, from R$5.00 to R$5.20.
Passengers who had recharged their Bilhete Único by January 5th at the previous price will be able to use it for 180 days.
The decision to increase the fare came from the City Hall. According to the agency, the increase is intended to cover the operating costs of São Paulo’s transportation system.
Protests against the increase
On the 9th, the State Union of Students organized a demonstration against the increase in bus fares in São Paulo. The group marched from Viaduto do Chá, in front of City Hall, to Vale do Anhangabaú. More demonstrations are scheduled for the 14th and 16th, in front of the Municipal Theater of São Paulo.
According to a statement released by the organization, the increase is the biggest in 10 years, without any improvement in the quality of the service.
PSOL deputies filed a popular action seeking to annul the increase, but the courts did not grant an injunction. As a result, the increase remains in force.
