Art is buzzing in São Paulo and there’s something good coming up! Between June 5 and July 26, you can see the renowned exhibition ‘Around the World’ at Casa Triângulo, located at Rua Estados Unidos, 1324 – Jardins. For the third time, the artist Joana Vasconcelos is exhibiting her works on female identity at the gallery.
Recognized worldwide, the Portuguese artist is the first woman in the world to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles. Considered one of the greatest contemporary artists active in the art market, Joana’s trademark is her monumental works.
What can I expect from ‘Around the World’?
This exhibition pays homage to women such as Ginette Dior, a florist and resistance fighter during the Second World War, and Léonie La Fontaine, a 19th century Belgian pacifist. These historical figures are united by the strength and inspiration of the feminine.
Among the show’s main attractions is ‘Valkyrie Léonie’, a giant sculpture suspended in the air. The work is seven meters wide and was exhibited at Dior’s Autumn/Winter 2023-2024 fashion show in Paris. It stands out for being the result of a mixture of the designer brand’s fabrics, embroidery, crochet and the use of LED lights, which create a unique atmosphere in the installation.
In addition to the huge representation of the Valkyrie Flower, ‘Around the World’ also features three other smaller sculptures. Together, they offer visitors a moment of contemplation and reflection on the feminine.
The exhibition’s relationship with Dior
At the invitation of creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, Joana was able to design these sculptures for the brand’s fashion show in Paris. The collaboration highlights artisanal processes and the feminist message in fashion.
The work ‘Valkyrie Miss Dior’, for example, was built with around 20 fabrics from the Dior collection and weighs over a ton. Like this piece, the exhibition aims to make an impact, but also provides a moment of contemplation.
