In recent weeks, the state of São Paulo has already lost thousands of hectares to forest fires. In an attempt to curb this environmental tragedy, the São Paulo government decreed on Sunday the 1st the closure of 80 forest parks and conservation units throughout the state. The decision is designed to protect not only the forests, but also the population, which runs the risk of visiting areas at risk of fire.
The closure is temporary, until September 12. In the meantime, the Forestry Foundation’s main focus will be on prevention, monitoring and combating fires. In addition, it will provide assistance to local communities that suffer from fires.

90% of forest fires are caused by humans
Every year, from June to October, the state of São Paulo suffers from a high incidence of forest fires. According to the Department of the Environment, in 2023, more than 90% of them had a human cause, whether due to carelessness or illegal activities. Such as the irregular use of fire on farms and pastures, vandalism, the illegal release of balloons and the burning of garbage.
The consequences are serious not only for the environment, with the loss of native vegetation, the death of wild animals and water pollution. But also for the population, since it harms air quality and can impact nearby communities, leading to the loss of property or even death.
Therefore, when you spot a fire, leave the area immediately and inform the Fire Brigade (193) and Civil Defense (199).
