Watching a good movie on the big screen without breaking the bank is a challenge for São Paulo residents. However, CineSesc stands out by offering a complete cultural experience on Rua Augusta for very little money.
São Paulo Secreto conducted an experiment: we visited the street cinema and spent less than R$ 30 per person. This amount covers the ticket for the screening, snacks, and transportation. In other words, a truly affordable outing.
Tradition on Rua Augusta and affordable programming
Opened in 1979, CineSesc has nearly 50 years of history at the same address. A rarity these days, when most of São Paulo’s street-side movie theaters have already given way to shopping malls, stores, and parking lots.
The theater’s programming blends major commercial releases, previews, and independent film screenings. In addition, ticket prices are among the lowest in the city: a full-price ticket costs R$ 20, while a half-price ticket is R$ 10. For those with a Sesc Membership Card, the discount is even greater: just R$ 6 per screening.
In addition to paid screenings, the street cinema organizes free screenings for the public; all you need to do is check the schedule announcements on social media and pick up your tickets in advance.
Affordable snacks at this open-air movie theater in São Paulo
The affordability is also reflected in the venue’s snack bar . Unlike the high prices typical of the Paulista Avenue area, the menu features very affordable options. During São Paulo Secreto’s visit, for example, the team enjoyed:
- Popcorn: R$ 2
- Cup of coffee: R$ 4
- Croissant: R$ 7.50
To top it off, we visited the street cinema on a day when screenings were free. Adding the cost of public transportation (R$ 11.80 for subway tickets), we only had to pay R$ 25.30 per person!
That’s why CineSesc is a great example of how São Paulo still offers cultural outings that are accessible to all audiences —especially for those who choose to explore the city by subway or bus.
