This Saturday, January 25th, São Paulo celebrates its 471st birthday. This is because it is believed that the city was founded on this date in 1554. So that you can learn more about the history of São Paulo’s capital, we’ve put together the main facts about São Paulo’s anniversary.
The origins of São Paulo
In January 1554, the Jesuit priests Manoel da Nóbrega, José de Anchieta and Manuel de Paiva established the company in Pateo do Collegio in order to catechize the indigenous population of the region.
On the 25th of that month, Father Manuel de Paiva celebrated São Paulo’s first mass there. According to the Catholic Church, the Apostle Paul converted to Christianity on this day. This is also the reason why the city was named after São Paulo.
In other words, the date marks the official installation of the Jesuits in the city and, today, it is one of the capital’s municipal holidays.
São Paulo’s birthday made official
The foundation of São Paulo is part of the period of occupation and exploration of Brazilian lands by the Portuguese, starting in the 16th century. At that time, a group of priests from the Society of Jesus climbed the Serra do Mar with the intention of building a Catholic college.
According to Wikipedia, Father José de Anchieta, in a letter to the Society of Jesus, explained the reasons for choosing the name and date:
On January 25th of the Year of the Lord, 1554, we celebrated our first Mass in a very poor and narrow house, on the day of the conversion of the Apostle St. Paul. That’s why we dedicate our house to him!”
