A classic in the North Zone, Bar do Luiz Fernandes has just been designated as intangible cultural heritage of the city of São Paulo. The so-called “bar with soul” has been going strong for over 50 years on Rua Augusto Tolle and serves some of the city’s most traditional snacks, such as bolovo and meatballs—often voted among the best in São Paulo.
Recently, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture awarded the establishment the City of São Paulo Seal of Cultural Value. With this initiative, the agency recognizes the venue’s importance in preserving São Paulo’s bohemian heritage and identity.
So, if you haven’t been to the bar yet, now you have yet another excellent reason to visit. On the other hand, if you’re already a regular, it’s worth stopping by the bar to celebrate this achievement!

A family legacy of resilience and innovation
Although the bar in the North Zone has been in operation since 1970, its history begins much earlier. In 1932, Eduardo and Idalina Fernandes opened a small grocery store on Rua Augusto Tolle. However, the family business went bankrupt in the 1960s. In the very next decade, their son Luiz Fernandes and his wife (who, interestingly, was also named Dona Idalina) opened a bar at the same address.
Currently, the business is run by the third generation of the family. The descendants are adapting the establishment to modern times without sacrificing tradition, preserving the original recipes and the attentive service they learned from their grandparents.
In addition, the new owners are investing in their own products to expand the brand. During the 2020 pandemic, for example, the team developed a frozen version of the meatball. In this way, they brought the flavors of Dona Idalina into customers’ homes, ensuring the business’s survival and success.

Bar do Luiz Fernandes focuses on a traditional menu and impeccable service
Bar do Luiz Fernandes offers the authentic “boteco” experience. The bar focuses on “the basics done right,” providing exceptional service and a classic menu served with care, rather than refined mixology or major culinary innovations.
The crowd favorite is undoubtedly the meat fritter, always crispy and flavorful. In addition, customers can try delicacies such as codfish fritters, oxtail, and Dona Idalina’s Surprise—which, as the name suggests, is a surprise, so we can’t reveal any more here!
Finally, be sure to try Seu Luiz’s caipirinha and the handcrafted batidas. We guarantee that, in addition to enjoying a delicious treat, you’ll experience a journey back in time in honor of São Paulo’s culture.
