The bakery is a sacred place for São Paulo residents. It’s the place to start the day, before work; the meeting point with friends at the end of the working day. Everyone meets there, even if only in the bread queue! Knowing the importance of this (almost) city heritage that is the bakery, we decided to present our readers with a curiosity: the oldest bakery in São Paulo.
Located in Praça João Mendes (near Praça da Sé), the Santa Tereza Bakery & Confectionery is not only the oldest still in operation in the capital of São Paulo, but also in the whole of Brazil. Get to know it!
Santa Tereza: the oldest bakery in Brazil is in São Paulo
This bakery, of Portuguese origin, was founded in 1872 by the Teixeira e Vaz family. It was originally located on Rua Santa Tereza, and was named after the address. However, it only stayed there until 1947, when it moved next to Praça da Sé.
Despite the change of address, the fame remained. Of the vast menu on offer today, the famous coxa creme remains from the original. Visiting São Paulo’s oldest bakery and not tasting the delicacy is almost like not visiting it at all.

Another of the bakery’s must-sees is its decoration, which features old photos from the time when it first opened, making the visit a kind of journey through time. After all, it’s over 150 years old in the center of São Paulo, one of the most historically rich places in the city.
And finally, the oldest bakery in São Paulo has an incredible view of the Sé Cathedral, which will make your coffee break that much more interesting. Shall we get to know it?
