Located in Praia Grande, the Itaipu Fortress attracts the attention of curious tourists because of its eccentric and unusual shape: a boot! When seen from the air, it is possible to see the shape of the shoe “stepping” into the Atlantic Ocean.
But it’s not just here that this phenomenon occurs! Another famous geographical formation that has gained prominence for the same reason is Italy. There is no logical explanation for the reason, just a natural coincidence that catches the eye.
What is the Itaipu Fortress?
Built in 1902, this fortress, made up of the Jurubatuba, Rego Barros and Duque de Caxias forts, is a military space belonging to the Brazilian Army and, unfortunately, has restricted access. On the other hand, if you really want to get to know the geographical features, flora and fauna of the site, you should know that there are guided tours organized by the military from time to time.
The 2.4 million m² area is part of the Xixová-Japuí State Park, a preserved part of the Atlantic Forest that preserves orchids, bromeliads, butterflies, saruês and lizards. A true stronghold of Brazilian biodiversity.
