João Carlos Martins and the Bachiana Filarmônica SESI-SP
One of Brazil’s most renowned conductors, João Carlos Martins began his career as a pianist.
At just 13, he began to consolidate his career in Brazil and five years later abroad.
However, a series of events almost interrupted his career. The maestro had to deal with the effects of an accident during a soccer match, a blow to his head during a robbery in Bulgaria, and focal dystonia, a disease that alters the functioning of the muscles and impairs movement.
So, in 2002, Martins left the stage as a pianist. But he returned in 2004, this time as conductor of the Bachiana Philharmonic.
The orchestra has performed in renowned concert halls in Brazil and around the world, bringing a repertoire made up of works by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, among other great names in classical music.
Today, the Bachiana Filarmônica SESI-SP is one of the most important private orchestras in the country.
