Diwali, India’s famous Festival of Lights, is coming to São Paulo this weekend. Celebrating the richness of Indian culture, the event will highlight the country’s art, gastronomy and history, as well as offering Brazilians a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in this ancient tradition.
The event, which traditionally celebrates the victory of light, is a joint initiative of the Indian community and the Consulate General of India in Brazil. This time, Largo da Batata will host the celebration from 11am to 9pm, with free admission. Enjoy!
Get to know Diwali
Celebrated by more than a billion people around the world, Diwali is a time for festivities, prayers, family reunions and charitable donations.
In São Paulo, the festival features a varied program that includes traditional dances, yoga workshops and art workshops, as well as guaranteed gifts at a craft fair.
In addition, in the gastronomic area, the event features Indian chefs preparing typical dishes such as samosas, biryanis and curries, as well as a wide variety of typical sweets. The aim is to highlight India’s diversity of flavors, as well as the traditional spicy dishes that mark the local cuisine.
Among the attractions, the public will enjoy, for example:
- Ceremony of Lights: On Saturday, at 7pm, candles will be lit in a ceremony that symbolizes hope and renewal, with wishes for the coming year.
- Shows and Dances: Bollywood-inspired music and dance performances, as well as other styles such as the lively Bhangra and the elegant Garba.
- Yoga and Meditation Classes: On Sunday, the public will be able to take part in meditation and yoga sessions led by Indian masters.
- Handicrafts and Henna: Finally, local and Indian artists and craftspeople will bring workshops in henna and rangoli, a traditional Indian art that uses colors and patterns to attract good energy.
