Last week, we witnessed two incredible meteor showers shining in the sky. Now, once again, we are about to receive another astronomical spectacle: the so-called ‘Blue Supermoon’, which will light up the sky on August 19. Find out how to appreciate the phenomenon!
Why “Blue Supermoon”?
The Supermoon is an astronomical phenomenon in which the moon reaches its “perigee”, i.e. its closest distance to the Earth. It tends to shine even brighter in the sky when coincides with the full moon, as this phase makes the star appear even larger than usual.
The name “Blue Moon” is used whenever there is more than one full moon in a month, or when there are four full moons in just one season. In August, we will witness a seasonal Blue Moon.
In other words, the “blue” has nothing to do with the color! The moon will appear in the same color as usual. The phenomenon was only named after a traditional English expression: “once in a blue light”, to describe something very rare.
What time will we see the Blue Moon in SP?
The Blue Moon will be visible all over the world, and of course in São Paulo will be no different!
The time of the phenomenon depends on each time zone. For those of us in the Brasilia time zone, the full moon will be at its apogee at 18:26.
In other words, now set your alarm so you don’t miss the show!
