No São Paulo resident doubts that Barra Funda is one of São Paulo’s most iconic areas. But now, the neighborhood has officially been named one of the “coolest” in the world by international sources, which shows that São Paulo’s nightlife also stands out among foreign audiences.
Barra Funda occupies third place in the ranking of the 39 coolest neighborhoods in the world in 2025, published on Wednesday (24) by the British magazine Time Out. The neighborhood shares space with areas in Tokyo, Mexico City, Paris, Buenos Aires and other global cities.

Barra Funda: from industrialization to bohemia
According to Time Out, Barra Funda’s working-class past is one of the reasons why it is so “cool”. The publication points out that the neighborhood “is the alternative soul of São Paulo, where industrial history meets an undeniably cool and creative vibe “. In addition, in the same block you can find “train tracks and a cult nightclub”, combining elements of the past with contemporary routine.
The neighborhood’s origins date back to the 19th century, during São Paulo’s railway era. At that time, the inauguration of Barra Funda Station generated a great demand for workers for the railroad warehouses, attracting the first residents.
By the end of the 1890s, Barra Funda had become a workers’ center and attracted many Italian immigrants, as well as freed black people. This industrial profile continued until the end of the 20th century, when the factories closed their doors and the region began to transform into what we know today.

What to do in the 3rd coolest neighborhood in the world?
