If you like destinations that mix the best of nature and history, get ready to be enchanted by Anchieta Island. The former “Brazilian Alcatraz”, which was once the scene of remarkable events, is getting a new lease of life with the revitalization of the old prison. Located just 8 km from the mainland in Ubatuba, the island is a haven of natural beauty and will now also be an unmissable cultural spot on the north coast of São Paulo.
Scheduled for delivery by the end of 2025, the space promises to be a unique cultural center, where visitors will be able to explore exhibitions, photos and historical documents while enjoying the breathtaking view of the preserved ruins.
What to expect from the new cultural space?
The transformation of the former Anchieta Island prison, a project of the Forestry Foundation, goes far beyond architectural revitalization. Designed by the renowned Kruchin Arquitetura office, the space will include:
- A structure with an exoskeleton that will preserve the ruins;
- Historical exhibitions that delve into the island’s past;
- New environments such as reception centers and cafés.
Exuberant nature and unique experiences
In addition to the historical part, the site is home to seven beaches with crystal-clear waters, such as Praia do Presídio and Praia do Engenho, which has a natural aquarium perfect for diving. There are also trails through the Atlantic Forest to explore. Highlights include the Underwater Trail in the Natural Aquarium and the Biodiversity Viewpoint.
Anchieta Island is a great example of sustainable tourism. All interventions on the site are designed to protect the environment, while controlled visitation guarantees the preservation of the ecosystem. With the revitalization of the prison, the island has become another attraction in Ubatuba. So when you go down to the coast, be sure to check out this tourist attraction!
